My friend Paul Hughes watches the gather from the hillside, his dark horse creates a dominant presence against the soft colors of the rocky hillside all of which prompted me to paint this. But what really captured me in this moment was the depth of experience this pair exudes and the legacy that is passed down generation to generation among ranchers.
