Several things drew me to this scene. One is the vantage point which gives a sense of looking up hill at this cow/calf pair, allowing their red hides to contrast against the blue sky. Another thing is the pastoral peace it conveys.
I'll bet this cow has had many calves! There's contentment and experience written all over her face.
I was also pleased with the "painterly" feel that came out in it. There's a loose softness to many of the brush strokes that, I think do a good job of describing the moment.
