I met Abilene Wells a couple years back down in the northern Arizona country. We were at a ropin' in the Chino area and immediately I was drawn to this cowgirl. Her demeanor, her handle on a rope, even the clothes she wore all spoke very loudly in a very quiet sort of way that she was the real deal. When I introduced myself that same genuine cowboy manner came out from the first "yes, ma'am" she spoke.
I was able to meet her folks and was blessed with permission to take some photos over the next couple days. So far the encounter has inspired 3 different pieces of artwork. The sculpture "Abilene," and the oil painting "Cowgirl Up" both made an appearance at the annual art show at the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg, AZ, where I had the great honor of having Abilene and her family come see them in person.
"Gonna Lasso the Moon," was the third piece so far inspired by young Abilene Wells. I am blessed to say both of these paintings have now found new homes, but I still want to extend the impact this cowgirl made on my life so I have a few giclées and posters available for anyone who is interested.
